41 Leatherworks

Our most asked question, What is 41? For many years, I was willingly subject to the torments of Canadian Tree Planting, all across mid to western Canada, where we would be required to mark our boxes of trees with our initials or name. Using a knife, twig, or rock, I would slash a quick LH into the box flap. As it was a crude, quick motion, it more closely resembled a 41 than an LH, which resulted in some confusion.

What does 41 mean?
Why leatherworking?

It started off as just a hobby, mostly to make things I needed, like axe or knife sheaths. Then it turned into making dice bags for all my fellow nerdy friends. I learned I had quite the passion for working with leather, particularly in making something quality to last many years of rugged use.

Uh yea, I sure hope it does

We try to reduce our waste as much as possible in a few ways:
Instead of arranging a pattern around the nicest parts of a hide, we incorporate the flaws, the brands, and the scarring. This helps us maximize our working area, and acknowledges that the material was once a living creature. Importantly, it cuts down on wasted material, helping keep costs down.

Instead of tossing our scraps, we keep them, all of them. Some will get used for keychains and pouches, others will get used for the leather washers we use for reinforcing our rivets.

This is an eclectic collection of one-off projects, commission work, or projects made for the love of the craft.

Our Location

You can find our studio only by traveling through the maze of construction and one ways; past overflowing Costco parking lots and annoyingly parked Uber drivers. We're nestled deep within the industrial zone, beside reasonably priced furniture and work gear.
